About Gabonjin and the history of the place

Magical Gabonjin – a small place on the island of Krk, ready to take you to past times, to stir up your imagination and warm your heart…

The island consists of 70 inhabited settlements, one of them being Gabonjin, with a small number of inhabitants, located on the western coast of Dobrinj Municipality, in the inland of Krk. The surrounding of the place, where the Villa is located, guarantees a true holiday.

Located in a vivid inland of the Dobrinj area, rich with natural and cultural heritage, a small green earthly paradise abounding with cleanness, the sound of nature, the beauty of peace.

Today there is a Glagolitic path towards St. Peter's Church, an educational path themed with Glagolitic script, around 200 meters in length.
We definitely recommend you to take a walk here up to the little church, which can be seen from the Villa. In addition, the Villa got its name after the church.

At the top of St. Peter's Hill there is St. Peter's Church, mentioned as early as in the 14th century, but probably much older. This relies on a report by a Venetian governor Antonio Vinciguerra from November 10, 1480, which says that already in this period the Villa was a ruin. It was handed over to Dobrinj's Captol, which renovated it adding a lodge later. It was extended in 1892, but in 1951 a new Sacred Heart of Jesus Church was built in Gabonjin.

An ideal place to slow down time and listen to the silence, bring your mind and your body in harmony with the untouched nature…

Such an opportunity presents a medicine for a tired human soul. So, we invite you to breathe a sigh of relief and relax…

Located 45°6'35" northern form the equator and 14°34'13" eastern from the initial meridian, there is a small village in the inland of Krk, belonging to Dobrinj Municipality.
Through the history of Glagolitic records, it was mentioned for the first time in 1376 under the name of Stanišće. As our toponymist Ivo Jelenović says, the name of the village is actually a possessive adjective ending with a suffix -in, derived from Gabonja. As Gabonja used to be an old Croatian proper name, Jelenović concludes the place is very old, probably much older than its first mentioning.

Above the very place there is an ancient St. Peter's Church built in 1279. The church is in a dominant position, which means it offers a beautiful view of the Kvarner Bay.

For several years now visitors of Gabonjin can enjoy a unique Glagolitic Alley, with 37 stone tablets with engraved messages – following the old path from Stobice (popular assembly hall) up to the St. Peter's Church. This is the St. Peter's Glagolitic Path.

Gabonjin is 3 km away from Malinska (a tourist destination in Malinska - Dubašnica Municipality) and 8 km away from Čižići (a tourist destination in Dobrinj Municipality), famous for its long sand beach with healing mud good for bone pain, rheumatism.

There is also a sports and recreational center Gabonjin which you can use for free (football, basketball, bowling etc.). Around the place there are a number of bike paths in nature.

A viewpoint by St. Peter's Church (252 m) offers a beautiful view of the Kvarner Bay.
